My students need a class library to replace the books lost in the waters of Hurricane Harvey and allow them to escape into a land of creativity and imagination!
I work at a junior high school in a small, rural town in Texas. Our school, students, and faculty have had one of the roughest years ever in 2017-2018. We were hit, like so many others, by Hurricane Harvey. Our entire district was affected, all seven campuses. It has been a nightmare and things seem to be improving but it has been a long, slow journey.
My students are still displaced from their homes, our campus, and are still only going to school for half a day.
We lost almost everything in our town. These kids lost desks, supplies, activities. Everyone one of them has been affected in some way. Some lost their homes and cars. Some had family lose their homes and vehicles. Some have people living with them. Everyone is emotional, tired, displaced, and living life as "normal" as they can even though nothing around us is normal. None of this is "normal." My kids are resilient and fighters. They refuse to let Harvey hold them back or ruin their 8th grade year. I beg you to help them recover and come back on top!
My Project
My students lost everything! This year has been very hard and the kids have asked and wanted to read more this year than before.
It is true, you never miss what you have until it is gone, and my students miss having a class library to escape and unwind inside the confines of a good book.
This is a need they really should have fulfilled. The academic benefits of reading will help them with mental stability and aid them in every subject. My kids have lost many of the books they love, such as "Wonder", "Holes", A Wrinkle in Time", and "Hatchet." These books are childhood classics and many of them have fond memories from their 6th grade year and projects they did with them. This classroom library will allow students that finish early a relaxing and fun reward to escape from the confines of their desk and lounge, read, and unwind. My students need to relax, wind down, and escape within a book. Please help us reach our goal!
