This job is a calling not just a vocation - I love it. A great group of scholars have elected to challenge themselves with taking a college stattistics course while still in high school. They aim to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching and more.
These students are willing to prioritize their education - they realize that education is their key to a better life.
Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level, they have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives. They realize that a solid education is the key to financial independence and career success.
Last year, I successfully incorporated the use of this on-line program in both my AP Statistics and AP Microeconomics classes. As soon as I started utilizing the program, I noticed an increase in student comprehension of concepts. The program allows students to practice questions in topics of their choosing; wrong responses are very thoroughly explained. The program provides students with excellent feedback in terms of their own personal strengths and areas for improvement. I also assigned weekly quizzes for the students to complete. The quizzes intentionally spiraled concepts from the beginning of the course through the current unit to keep students fresh on all topics. The system provided me with item analysis on both a class level and on a student level. From this, I was able to create data-driven lessons to focus on those concepts that this particular group of students needed most. Additionally, the feedback allowed me to pair students appropriately.
