My Students
Save our classes from ruinous budget cuts! My school is desperately dealing with budget cuts. I have invested money and volunteered my time to help my students get started in the new year. They need more than I can provide. Hopefully you can help!
My students come from poverty-stricken neighborhoods in the inner city but they are highly motivated.
Our school is a very large 6-12 college-preparatory public school and, as a result of various issues, we are in a major budget shortfall. Nonetheless my students persevere. Last year, with my high expectations and a heavy work load, my students succeeded in all my classes. The majority of my Global History students scored averages above 80% while city-wide most students are failing. In my Advanced Placement class, 90% of my students passed the national exam (35% higher than the national average pass rate of 54%). In addition, 82% scored in the top levels of 4 and 5 versus the national average of 26%.
Clearly something good is happening! I hold my students' strong work ethic responsible for their ability to succeed despite having few resources and living in single parent homes.
My Project
The resources I have requested are critical to the intense study and group work my students do to succeed in their courses. My students need AP review books, pencils, paper, paddles, portfolios and source cards, and other items to improve the classroom. I focus on literacy and building communities. These materials are critical for my students as they often cannot afford to purchase their own review books or pencils or folders. My Advanced Placement students will use the review books for test preparation (critical for their strong performance) and all my students will get access to the other basic school supplies requested to complete group projects and individual portfolios showing what they've learned in every unit.
Donating to this project will mean my students will have a chance to succeed again and I can improve the class.
Last year my two DonorsChoose projects helped support my students in accomplishing their goals (and preparing them for college). I need that same support this year. My students need your help! Please consider how valuable your donation is to the future of high-needs children. These kids can go to college if they receive they right support and it's up to you to help me get them there!
