Help Hands-on Learning

My students need math manipulatives to help maximize their learning. They also need dry erase boards and clipboards to be mobile learners.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are becoming self aware learners and are questioning why and how they learn. They are being challenged to explain why things work as they do, especially in math. I do not want them to do the operations but to know why and how the operations work and how they can use this information.

My students are very creative fifth graders that love school.

We are in a Title 1 school in a low income area with few resources available from the district or parents. All of the parents try to give what they can; they are involved in their children's learning and support their children's education to the best of their abilities. This is further hindered due to the fact that I am a first year teacher and am lacking in many materials in the classroom. Unfortunately our district does not even provide basic supplies, other than 2 cases of paper a year, so a lot of my financial resources have been poured into providing the basic supplies like pencils, glue, scissors, binder paper, paper clips, and so on. My students deserve access to more materials to increase their overall learning.

My Project

Imagine walking in from recess to begin math for the day. You are studying fractions, a very hard subject for most of us. All you have to understand fractions is a textbook, a power point presentation put together by your teacher with some pictures, and paper fraction strips. Not an ideal way to learn! My students would love some hands-on fraction materials to make fractions more concrete. With their dry erase boards they could solve problems with me as I demonstrate on the board, they could then take turns solving problems with a partner. When it is time to study for the test, they will use their clipboards to have a scavenger hunt around the room. Then, when it is time for Reading Language Arts, I will have more comprehension materials to use and help all my students, especially the English Language Learners better understand what they are reading.

With your donations to this project, my students will have hard surfaces; clipboards and dry erase boards as mobile surfaces so they can learn and write in places other than their desks.

They will have hands-on materials to help them understand fractions. You will help make abstract fractions a concrete and real thing that they can touch and see in order to help them understand. Fractions are concepts we encounter as adults everyday, help them encounter fractions with a grin and not a groan!
