This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
100% of the students in my 4th grade class receive free breakfast and lunch. I have students that are ADD/ADHD, English as their second language, and some that are significantly behind academically.
Many of them come from a single parent household that does not have access to the internet or engaging books.
In my classroom I have students with various ranges of reading ability starting from the 2nd grade level on up to the 6th grade level. Guided reading is an excellent time for my students to gain exposure to different novels with a little bit of help and encouragement for me.
My Project
My students are in desperate need of some new chapter books for guided reading. Our school's book room is full of books that are well loved but have covers falling off, pages torn, and outdated topics. I am in search of some fresh, new books to engage my reluctant readers. Requested titles include Out of My Mind, Charlotte's Web, Sarah Plain & Tall, Matilda, No Talking, Frindle, and Hatchet. With having such a variety of reading levels in my classroom guided reading time will become a precious time to foster their love for reading.
Our guided reading time is a twenty-five minute block that I can help my students escape the classroom and dive into new worlds and realities through books.
My students will be reading classics to newly released texts. With the variety of texts that I have chosen my students are sure to beg for our guided reading time to never end!
