I'm blessed to work with students that come from such special places all over the world. They carry so much knowledge, experience and their all ancestors with them. At the same time, because of current and historical traumas, this also means my students have been displaced from their ancestral homes.
My students are so excited to reconnect with the land, their food, and most importantly, themselves, through the school garden.
At a time in their life of great transition; physically, emotionally and educationally, being able to reconnect a strong sense of self, place, and purpose, will be something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
My Project
Our ancestral food garden will provide a safe space for students to learn, share, and reconnect with themselves. By growing the food of their ancestors, they will be able to strengthen their relationship with the seeds, soils and their own bodies. Whether it is growing corn to make tamales or cassava for fufu, the hope of this garden is for students to see themselves in what they grown. The garden will also bring in their family members share their knowledge and cook their traditional foods for students.
Whether it's turning compost, shoveling soil, planting trees, or building new garden beds, these tools allow us to create the garden we've imagined.
So often, school gardens are either filled with unnecessary tools or ones that are flimsy and end up breaking halfway through the year. As a school in need of basic garden tools, we want to make sure that we get the tools that will last for years to come. We also want to make sure that there are enough so whole classes can work all in the garden at the same time. We have made sure that no dollar is wasted and everything we are asking for is fundamental for any school garden.
If we are able to meet our goal, the only thing left will be our hard work! This will truly bring the whole classroom to the garden!
