My 4th and 5th grade combination class is located in Pinole, California, where 65% receive a free lunch. The students are stepping up to the challenge of my academically demanding class. At the beginning of this school year, my students' reading comprehension level ranged from kindergarten to beginning 6th grade, with only 3 of the 31 kids reading at grade level. In the first 6 months of this school year, my class has averaged 1 year and 3 months progress on their independent reading level, and now 30 of 32 students have met their student expectations for their student growth percentile in reading comprehension.
With the idea of educating the whole child, I have been including music as part of our curriculum.
We are currently practicing singing, piano, and drums, but I also want to give my students the opportunity to compose music on the computer.
My Project
We are trying to do our part to bring music back to public education. With a music creation program (Abelton Live), we plan to expose students at the school to music creation and production in the computer-based format that is used with many of today's popular songs! Being able to create and perform music will be a life-changing experience form many students, and can be something that they can enjoy the rest of their life. As our current music program only has 35 actual instruments available for our 250 students, we would like to make music assessable to more of our students by giving students access to a highly engaging and challenging computer-based music experience.
