Help Give My Students Increased Access to Multi-Sensory Books
Help me give my students multi-sensory tools that make literacy accessible for all.
This project expired on November 16, 2019.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Our students are a wonderful group of children, who are an absolute joy to spend time with. They also are some of the neediest students in the district. They all have multiple complex disabilities which makes it important that they have adapted materials that allow them access learning. Our children learn through multi sensory experience seeing, hearing, touching and doing.
Our school district has a very high poverty rate and has suffered budget cuts that seriously impact our ability to purchase materials.
The majority of students in our school are on free or reduced lunch and come from homes in which educational resources are limited.
My students, in over a dozen intensive classrooms across our city, are enjoying tactile picture book kits that the readers can feel to help them better understand language and literacy through touch. I have personally custom made almost 20 adapted book kits for students who have special needs to borrow and use to give them multi sensory access to print. I plan to continue to build this library with more titles over the next year and a working to inspire others to help in this endeavor. The addition of specdrum rings will allow for customized sounds to be inserted into into their books and 3D props giving another level of sensory interaction . We are in a high poverty school district where cutting edge tools like this could be considered a luxury verses the necessity that they are. This project would allow me to pilot these tools and to help build a case for how beneficial and necessary these tools are for my students to build literacy and communication skills.
Technology opens doors for my students in important ways.
Learning to interact with books helps build not just literacy but receptive and expressive skills. Filament requested will help me to continue to 3D print more book kits that will benefit my students and the rings will add that valuable audio component and give my students exposure to wonderful stem tools.
