Hurricane Harvey came and left our community and our school flooded. Our school is the heart of a small rural community located along the Texas coast. My counseling room was a favorite spot for students to come to calm down, discuss social, emotional, and/or educational problems, and work on study skills. I serve 750 students ages 3-11 years or 4th grade. Many of our students are now homeless or living in substandard housing as we all try to rebuild after the storm.
Hurricane Harvey destroyed our school and took much of the furniture and instructional aids along with it. What few items were saved were stored in boxes in a long hall. Bookcases would make life so much easier.
Living out of boxes after Harvey has not been fun for kids.
Each week I have dug through boxes looking for needed items, often not finding the needed item until after it is too late. The new bookcases will help me to display my books and toys for students to easily get to.
New bookcases will better display the games and toys for children to choose from. New bookcases would help both the students and myself in being able to better find what we need when we need it.
