Help Get My Students Excited About Reading!

My students need 16 copies of the books "Ginger Pye", "Dogsong" and "Bud, not Buddy".

I am a third year teacher working at an inner city school with very few resources. The school is a great community filled with teachers who extend themselves everyday to give much needed help to their students. I consider myself to be one of these teachers. I come to school early and stay late to work with my students and work on my classroom so that the hours spent in the classroom is enjoyable as well as educational. The students at my school come from very poor families. 10% of the students are homeless and all of the students in my class receive free breakfast and lunch. For many of these students the meals that they receive at school are the only meals they receive all day. I play the role of teacher and parent to many of my students and do everything within my means to help them. I taught first grade for two years but now have been switched to eighth grade! Though I am very excited about my new grade level move; I realized that I do not have any materials for them to use during the day... especially books! My students have a reading textbook with a collection of stories to read. However, they are only short excerpts from the original longer versions of the stories. My students are left wanting to hear the rest of the story or are confused because they have not read everything before and after the short excerpt. My students want to be able to read complete books but I am unable to find enough class copies of books for my students that are on level. I want to encourage reading in my classroom instead of leaving my students unsatisfied after reading short snippets from a longer book. The more my students read the better they become at reading. I know that getting these class copies of Ginger Pye, Dogsong and Bud, Not Buddy will motivated my students to want to read and that they will get much more out of their learning experience from reading and analyzing a full length text rather than just some small snapshot. These books will help my students in school for years to come! PLEASE HELP MY STUDENTS BECOME BETTER READERS AND DEVELOP A LOVE OF READING!!!
