This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am a first year teacher at Media College Prep, a new, small school located in East Oakland. I teach both 9th and 10th grade English. In my classroom I have a class goal that each student will independently read 20 books in the school year. This year, most of my classes have reached ten books only. This low number, I believe, is due to the fact that there are HARDLY ANY books available to my classes. There is a small collection of novels that circulate among the teachers at our campus, and students have access to the school library, which is a shared service and minimal in selection. Overall, the school is under-funded, and books are hard to come by. Thus, I've started creating my own personal class library (which is very humble at the moment) with the hope that a broader selection of books will motivate my students to reach the class goal of 20 books in one school year.
