My Students

Help me start the Battle of the Books at my Title I school! Most students do not have books or library cards and would rather surf YouTube than read a book! Many struggles with reading and come from low income and families with limited education. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch (100%).

I hope this helps in tackling the huge task of promoting BOB and starting a BOB team!

My Project

A class set of this novel (one of the BOB books) will allow me to spur excitement for Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books in my state is a book competition focusing on a set list of books. Students read books off the list and practice with questions about the book. Each year, the list changes, but books come back after staying off for a few years. A BOB book on this year's list will come back on future lists! (That way, it's an investment in the progressive literature that keeps giving!) Since BOB questions are specific, it will help to lead students in one of the books off the list so they will know what to focus on when reading BOB books on their own. By leading students and reading The Hate You Give together, we will be able to explain further understanding to our EC and ESL learners. The book I have chosen as a class set involves dynamic characters, set in an impoverished neighborhood, and centers around riveting and topical issues that my may students confront. The Hate U Give deals with teens confronting racism, poverty, gang violence and negative relationships with law enforcement and authority.
