This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The days of having students sit quietly in desks lined up in a row listening to lectures are long gone. My students thirst for hands-on learning. They enjoy working with their peers, participating in class projects, and being creative.
Often times, they don't come to school with the tangible tools they need to learn.
When these tools are provided, they thrive academically and socially. My school is located in a low-income area, and many of the students live within walking distance of the school. Many of them are responsible for getting themselves up and ready for school without the assistance of an adult. There are times when this causes them to be late for school, but they do the best they can to catch up with the activities they missed. These same students have trouble getting the materials they need to complete classroom assignments and projects. I don't take off points for not having materials. I do my best to provide each of my students with the tools they need to ensure equity and fairness.
My Project
My kids are always hungry. Due to the low economic status of the area I teach in, I know my students' families don't have the money to always provide them with snacks to get them through the school day. I want to try to keep snacks in my class so that I can be the one to provide them.
My goal is to have enough snacks in my class to last me so I can always provide the nourishment they need.
I always feel helpless when my kids are hungry, and I give them my own snacks sometimes that I bring from home and let them share so they can get through the rest of the day feeling nourished. Hopefully these snacks will help with me providing them the food they need to get through the day.
