This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach First Grade at a Charter School in a very low income district in New York. This year, I have a large number of students who are just starting school and have had limited exposure to books.
I have a group of students who are just starting to read. They need to start off with very simple texts that they are able to read using the knowledge that they have and the strategies we are learning.
With so many students just starting to read, our classroom has run out of books at the A, B, and C Guided Reading levels. We need more of these books so that every student who needs these books has access to them.
Your help will provide my students with the books that they need to build confidence and enjoyment of reading. By reading books at their independent level, students are able to practice skills and build strategies that enable them to grow as readers and move on to more difficult books. These first books will build the foundation for a lifetime of reading for these First Graders!
