Help! Fire! Run! Ohhh!...Actual Science is Going Down! (Project 3)
Help me give my students a science education that allows them to "do science" rather than "sit and get" science. I want to inspire students. This is list 1 of many, all for my students.
I've only been in my new teaching role & school, for two weeks, but I can already see my students' thirst for science & exploration. My students deserve a science lab/classroom that fits their expectations, desires, & interests. The students & community I serve, deserve a top-notch education. They currently have the bare minimum in terms of equipment, materials, etc.
Everyone has had that moment in school when you walk into science class and think, "Yes, we get to do experiments and mix stuff up and dissect and it is going to be awesome," but only to find out those events don't occur as often as they should, if at all.
For juniors & seniors in my school, this is the chance to check interests before making life decisions. For the sophomores & freshman, this is my chance to give them the science education they desire and deserve, my chance to show them the opportunities science can provide, and in a small manner, help maintain our ability to compete on a global scale.
My Project
I know the price tag on this project is big, and this is the 3rd of several lists. However, this is what I need to help educate students while DOING SCIENCE, rather than sit-and-get science. That is the bottom line. Students want to do science, explore, experience, ask questions, etc. and I'm the person tasked with getting it done.
Gel electrophoresis, model building supplies, experiment kits, glassware, chemicals, and more, are all things that will boost interest and hopefully inspire some to fill the future job market gaps in STEM, but without the materials in this project, it really won't happen.
For the students that "aren't good at science" or "don't like science," my job is to institute change. For the students who like/love science, my job is to promote it. Without supplies, neither can occur.
