Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a language arts educator at a middle school located on West Farms Road in the Bronx.
Last year our 6th, 7th and 8th graders participated in a film competition called Digital Documentaries sponsored by Teaching Matters Inc. The Bronx Borough President was the leading supporter of this project and schools around thee Tri-State area participated. To be a part of this digital documentary our school had to purchase three digital camcorders, three laptop computers, and three scanners.
Although our school did not place first in the final competition, as a first year teacher, I was honored that I was selected to assist my 8th grade class with this project. In my opinion, it was a huge success. Our students worked together as a team and they took on roles as actors, writers, directors, camera operators, etc. There was also an array of talent that was showcased on film, for example tap dancing, poetry, artistry, singing, researching of major historical events etc.
Among the other films submitted, my eighth grade class created an informational piece on children making a difference in history and in today's society. There was such an excitement and energy exhibited throughout the whole process. It definitely had a beneficial effect on our students.
This year we decided to create our own film festival. However, the unthinkable happened over the summer, someone stole two of our digital camcorders and two of our laptop computers. This came as a shock and a disappointment. As a result, our plans to involve the students in an annual film festival have been suspended.
Purchasing this equipment was a huge financial expense for the school and we don't have the funds to replace the equipment at this time. This horrendous act of cruelty has succeeded in hurting our children because they lose out in developing a well-rounded education and learning how to incorporate media as a form of expression.
I am hoping someone will find it in his/her heart to help us replace these two digital camcorders so that my students and others can be impacted through the use of media.
