As a teacher in an urban low-income school, my students face many challenges outside of the classroom. Despite these challenges, they are hard working, determined, and inquiring group of students. I am requesting funding to enhance my unit on Insects by turning my second graders into budding entomologists!
As a an urban science teacher I often see my students struggling to make real world connections to the content due to lack of opportunities they have outside of school.
Unfortunately, families in our school do not have the resources to supply these learning opportunities for my students. This lack of opportunity makes it difficult to create those real world connections. By supplementing my curriculum with as much hands-on materials as possible I am giving my students those real life connections that they need to be successful in their academics and future experiences.
My Project
After years of traveling from class to class to teach science I finally have a classroom to call my own! Unfortunately, many of my personal items are outdated, not in usable condition, or broken. However, I have an 7 year old river tank that was a favorite of mine and past students to observe the animals and plants within. Unfortunately, all the necessities to get it up and running are broken.
My beautiful 20 gallon river tank is empty and needs materials to get it up and running.
Students are excited to have animals to observe and watch grow over the school year.
Please help my students have a river tank ecosystem to observe in the new science classroom!
