Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many times have we told children "don't do this" or "don't do that" without actually teaching them what to do? That is one of the biggest challenges facing the children at my school. Many of our students have not been taught how to resolve conflicts or how to interact kindly with each other.
The students I work with come live with a lot of poverty and insecurity in their lives.
They come from neighborhoods that teach them they need to use guns and violence to solve problems. Many of them have witnessed at least one violent act in their short life times.
Even with that, they are the sweetest most loving children that a person could ever meet, most of the time. At times, they tend to explode or shut down because they have never been taught how to react appropriately to challenging situations. Instead of telling someone to "stop", they will hit, kick, or punch. They have difficulties giving compliments to others because they, many times, do not hear this in their home lives.
Many of our students have attendance issues because they do not know how to express themselves. This then turns into refusing to come to school or being scared of coming to school. We have approximately 600 kids in our school and 97% of those kids receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I am requesting books and games that I can use with my students. Many of the items I've requested deal with character education such as conflict resolution, self-esteem, kindness, and anger management. These wonderful students have such great potential, but they need to learn how to act socially appropriate with other students and adults. With these things, I will be able to not only reach individual students, but I am planning on taking these materials into the classroom so that all the students in our school can benefit from them.
My goal is for my students to learn how to feel good about themselves and resolve conflicts so that they can become productive members of our society.
Your donation to my project will give each child in my school a chance to better themselves by helping them learn how to communicate and act around others.
They will also learn about ways to resolve conflicts that do not involve violence or out of control anger. Your donation will help each child in my school have a brighter social future.
