My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down ? Our students are just starting to discover books, but we are running out of books to share with them.
We teach English to over 100 mainstream and special needs eleventh grade students. Two years ago, the district introduced an independent reading program. At first, it was met with resistance from the students as they did not know that books could be enjoyed. They are slowly realizing that there are great books out there and are reading books daily.
My Project
These new books will make a huge difference in the lives of our students. Due to extreme budget cuts, the money is not available for classroom libraries. My co-teachers and I have been using our own money to purchase books for our students, but they are quickly reading through our library. These books will allow our students to continue to develop their love of reading.
Many of our students are reading below grade level. Since September, their reading levels have gone up. This is mainly due to the daily reading we do in class. We are asking for high interest reading materials that deal with subject matters that appeal to our students. These new books will allow them to continue to improve their reading and learn to love books as much as their teachers.
