Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students are book-hungry. They devour high-interest series like Harry Potter, Narnia, and more. Unfortunately, series books like these are expensive, and there are often not enough to go around. We all have a beloved childhood book series. Help create that same magic for my 5th graders!
Everyday, my co-teacher and I get to spend our time with twenty-eight energetic, full of personality fifth graders.
They are amazing and so eager to learn. We teach an ICT class, or inclusion class, made up of students with diverse learning needs. Some are high-performing, high achieving students. Others struggle with behavior and learning issues. We have students on the Autism Spectrum and many students with Learning Disabilities. They exist in an energetic learning community but live in a high-poverty area. Many of their parents are new immigrants to our country. Even the middle-school application process is competitive in Brooklyn, and many of our students' parents lack the time or means to keep up in this environment. Despite the obstacles that our students and parents face, I'm often astounded by their drive, ambition, and wonderful learning spirits!
My Project
My students are gearing up for a unit on Fantasy Book Clubs. We have some books to support this unit but we want to make sure that all students are engaged in high-interest reading. They love giving recommendations to one another, but often there are not enough of these types of books to go around. My students will use these books to have rich conversation and build necessary reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, these books will be used for years to come by many fantasy-series-hungry fifth graders!
This donation will help build our classroom library, making it engaging, inviting, and exciting for our fifth grade students.
Education can open doors, break class barriers, and give students opportunities they never thought possible. This begins with engagement and excitement. Your donation will help all of our learners find a book to interest them. You can help them feel the magic of diving into an imaginary world and falling in love with characters, settings and events.
