Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so looking forward to the 2005-2006 school year and to meeting my new 8th grade students at MS 118! In preparation for their arrival, I am working to set up a classroom library that will inspire and motivate my students to each read 25 books. As a second year Teach For America teacher in a low income school with little funding, I am constantly faced with the challenge of how to get books for my students. Last year, while many of my students read between 20 and 25 books, they were often frustrated with the selection of books in my classroom- most of which were dated and falling apart. Most of my students cannot afford to buy books on their own, and only a few have public library cards. Last year I spent hundreds of dollars buying books and making photocopies to keep them engaged, but quickly realized that my own personal funds are not enough to get the resources my students really need.
What my students need is a classroom library that includes engaging books that relate to their lives. They also need books that are varied in interest and reading level so that each student can find books that are "just right" for him or her. If you choose to fund my proposal, you will help to "feed" 70 Bookworms upon their arrival in September. They will have daily access to a library that excites them to independently read in and out of class. I have come to realize that the best way to improve my students' reading skills for high school and beyond is to get them reading as much text as possible that is appropriate to their interests and reading levels. It is impossible to do this without a first class library! I believe that with these materials, you will not only help my students drastically improve their reading skills, but you will also help to turn many of my incoming 8th graders into life long readers.
