My students need 30 Map Skills practice books to help them learn valuable geography skills and help me expose them to a world outside of their St. Louis neighborhood.
I work with an extremely diverse group of students. Many of my kids are immigrants or refugees from war torn countries. The diversity that I see on a daily basis is truly amazing. Unfortunately, my students still have very little knowledge of geography and the world outside of their neighborhood.
This year, I had the privilege of looping with my students from last year.
I have an amazing group of kids who have made a ton of progress since they first came to me as fifth graders. My students are very bright individuals, but most of them are still performing below grade level. We talk a great deal about the power of hard work, and my students are learning that if they are willing to put in the effort, that they will see results.
My Project
My school is located in a high poverty neighborhood of downtown St. Louis. To give you an idea, 98% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. My students are amazing kids and are beginning to understand that if they work hard that they will see positive outcomes. Unfortunately, my school lacks many of the basic resources that my kids need to be successful. For example, my social studies books are over 15 years old and are written for students who read at a much higher level. I am requesting a classroom set of geography student workbooks that will give my students valuable practice working with map skills, but more importantly, will help launch conversations about countries and cultures outside of St. Louis.
Thank you so much for considering my project.
I feel very strongly that all students deserve the right to a quality education. I think that my students would benefit a great deal by having access to geography workbooks, and I know that it would make my job as their teacher that much easier.
