Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine how you would feel if you were excited to learn more about the world around you, but your classroom didn't contain enough books that you could read confidently, accurately and independently. That's just how my English-Language-Learner students feel right now!
My English-Language-Learner students are bright, curious, creative, and indomitable!
They are working so hard to improve their independent reading skills and they are incredibly hungry to learn more about the world around them. They have a deep desire to read about dinosaurs, insects, large mammals, the human body, communities, careers, and other topics in science and social studies. Right now, our library doesn't have reading-level appropriate books for them.
My Project
If my students receive the library of non-fiction and informational books I'm requesting on their behalf, they will be able to use those texts to become more proficient, confident, and accurate readers. The knowledge they gain from these non-fiction books will help them improve their academic performance across the curriculum. Just as importantly, reading about topics as varied as weather, nutrition, and outer space will whet my student's curiosity to continue reading independently in third grade and beyond!
High-quality books are the cornerstone of any good classroom.
Reading non-fiction and informational texts is an important practice for all students, and especially for English-Language-Learners! The books I'm requesting will make a major impact on my bilingual students by giving them the opportunity to succeed and grow as independent readers! Thank you for any support you can give my amazing students.
