My students love to use the dollhouse in the classroom, but we have had to limit the amount of children at one time due to amount of materials. They have grown to learn how to share, but I would like to help the children to be able to have more children play with the doll house during center time.
Despite the many challenges my students face in their lives, they keep going and learn to be stronger.
My classroom has two sessions, an AM and PM one, with 16 children in each. The classroom has many more boys then girls, who are lacking hand and eye and coordination. My students have speech and language delays as well as cognitive delays. They attend school four days a week and work on school readiness goals. This means that children are ready for school, families are ready to support their children's learning, and schools are ready for children. The majority of the children in my classroom come from low-income homes, and this is their first exposure in a school setting. They come from two parent homes, single parent homes, and grandparents raising grandchildren.
My Project
Our classroom recently got a doll house, furniture, and families funded. The children love the doll house and are so engaged. But only a limited amount of children can play at this activity at one time. I want to give the children the opportunity to expand doll house and living play to the carpet area as well. I grew up in the country and most of my students have no idea what it is like on a farm or not living in the city. I want to model and show other ways to live.
I envision my students using the doll house families, pets, furniture and horse stable to allow for pretend play and learn about other ways people live.
I want my students to improve their language and communication skills by taking a role as the mom, dad, child, grandparent, aunt, uncle or even pet. I want my students to understand they can be anything they want to be. Children are asked to grow up too quickly. Doll house accessories will help my students be children much longer.
