Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help my students properly prepare themselves for the 21st century and beyond! Many of my students have a genuine curiosity in the events that shape the world around them. However, they get their information primarily from TV, Facebook, snapchat or 140-character Twitter posts. I want my students to build a passion for continuous reading, discovery learning, and analytical thinking. Being able to incorporate media literacy into the classroom on a daily/weekly basis will enable my kids to become media savvy and truly analyze the images/videos that they are bombarded with on a daily basis.
85-90% of students at my school live in poverty; 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
Chromebooks are a cost-effective and necessary tool to enhance their technical ability. Students' education and future should not suffer as a result of their current financial and social circumstances. These students are an investment in which everyone has a stake. They will be the builders and creators of our community, the employees of our businesses, and the leaders of the next generation. Building a passion for education and civic responsibility is imperative in preparing these children for the future.
My Project
Many of my scholars do not have access to a computer outside of school and therefore are way behind most children their age in regards to media literacy and ability to independently navigate through the internet, Google Drive, Slides etc. My scholars are not only behind the curve in terms of reading and writing, but more significantly for the future, they are even further behind in their ability to "read" or "access" texts and sources that they uncover through the endless maze known as the internet.
The daily/weekly use of Chromebooks will enable my kids to become more engaged citizens as we create presentations, videos, documents through Google Classroom (newly opened in our school) and the simple, basic understanding of what a trusted source on the internet looks like versus citing a meme or facebook link.
