I am a music/performing arts teacher in an alternative high school in downtown Brooklyn, New York City. Expecting my students to stop listening to hip hop in my classroom (completely) is denying the reality of their experience, their world and their potential to appreciate music and dance in the context of history, social struggle, human expression and political power. SO - if you can't beat 'em, JOIN 'em!!!
How am I going to do this? I'm going to start taking a closer look at the complete culture of Hip Hop right along with them: the music, the dance, the meaning of Hip Hop. You may walk into my class and wonder "who's teaching who"...but that, I believe, is the BEST kind of classroom to walk into. I have NO DOUBTS this will be one of my most successful classes.
In this class we will focus on: The who, what, where, when, why of hip hop from its birth, through its evolution, to its present state. We're going to be listening to, reading, viewing film footage about, learning and practicing hip hop dance moves, discussing and writing about hip hop music AND the culture of Hip Hop in all of its myriad manifestations.
But - to do this right - I need the right materials. There's a new hip hop reader on the market that I want to use of in this course. It's called That's the Joint: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader. I have 16 now but need 10 more!! The blurb on this book reads:
"This book brings together the best-known, most influential writings on rap and hip-hop from its beginnings to today. Spanning nearly 25 years of scholarship, criticism, and journalism, this unprecedented anthology showcases the evolution and continuing influence of one of the most creative and contested elements of global popular culture since its advent in the late 1970s. Think of it as "Hip-Hop 101."
Because we're also going to be studying and demonstrating the history of Hip Hop dance that has developed right along Hip Hop music I'd like to get three different HIP HOP dance instructional DVDs to fully round out the purpose and scope of this course.
This course will make it possible for our students to earn necessary credits either in gym, music or required electives. It could possibly benefit all 350+ students a year and be used year after year.
