Our students have taught me more in the past 7 years then I have ever had to the hopes of teaching them. They are inspirations to our community! I wake up everyday wishing I could help make all their dreams come true. Even though they may not have a lot to look forward to at their homes or in their neighborhoods, it is my goal to make sure their classroom is a fun, exciting, and safe place for them to experience new things! Our school may not have many resources, but it can start within a classroom. As the curriculum designer for our ELA department it is imperative that I bring the best resources, knowledge and passion to all of our students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Students who can develop a love of reading within their school career will help motivate students to grow as learners, and to help them expand their knowledge about our world! Our students come into the school with a smile everyday not matter what, and they deserve to leave that way as well. They are our future!
Anna Gillingham developed the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction for students with dyslexia. This professional development opportunity would help myself as the ELA instructional coach provide training to all of my K-3 early literacy teachers. This approach is beneficial not only for students with dyslexia, but for all learners. It can be implemented in a large group setting as well as with individuals, small groups and at-risk populations. The approach allows for implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) at all levels while allowing for differentiation of instruction. At our school we are currently at a 4% proficiency rate for Reading in our 3rd through 5th grade classes. It is imperative that our youngest readers receive the highest quality of direct literacy instruction to meet the needs of all our students and their learning styles. Our school does not have the funding for off sight professional development opportunities, or a PTA to help us raise money to continue the education for our teachers. The IMSE Orton-Gillingham training and approach will allow teachers to incorporate the five components essential to an effective reading program into their daily lessons: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. This approach is based off of the Orton-Gillingham methodology and focuses on explicit, direct instruction that is sequential, structured, and multi-sensory. As a staff we believe all students should have an equal opportunity for success and ownership over their learning. We will go above and beyond to make sure we have the knowledge and resources to make all their dreams possible.
