Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a class of fourth-graders who are bilingual in English and Spanish. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood, and all students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Almost 80% of our students are English learners, so they need extra support as they learn a second language, in addition to the core curriculum. They learn best when they have opportunities for hands-on learning, especially in math and science.
The goal at our school is for all students to aspire to attend college and have a plan for a future career.
I try to give my students a variety of ways to learn and to share what they have learned with others by incorporating technology into the curriculum and providing opportunities for students to be creative. They enjoy being able to collaborate on projects that help them learn together.
My Project
In my fourth-grade classroom, STEM and STEAM lessons are some of the most engaging learning activities my students participate in during the year. Integrating the different STEM subjects really helps students gain a deeper understanding of the concepts they are exploring. This also helps them understand that they can aspire to STEM careers in the future. Collaborating with each other to design projects and test out their designs gives students opportunities to develop essential 21st Century skills. Last year my students loved learning to code on their Chromebooks. They were so excited by the idea of writing code that creates something new.
This project would help my students take their coding skills and expand them into the three-dimensional world.
When my students found out about these brand new Gripper Building Kits for Dash robots, they were so excited. They decided that we needed them to add to the accessories we already have from a previous project. The gripper kits will allow the robots to catch and grip objects, expanding the options that students will have when programming their robots. This will help students explore the concepts of potential and kinetic energy that are part of the new NGSS science standards.
