Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 4th grade teacher at P.S. 137, a school on the lower east side of Manhattan. P.S. 137 is a school filled with students ready to learn, teachers eager to teach, and a community of people dedicated to good education and the possibilities it can offer our students. P.S. 137, however, is not filled with resources. Our school does not have the facilities for a music program, or even a gym program, and so a lot of time is spent in the classroom setting. While classroom time is important, I am seeking ways to optimize that time to create openings and opportunities for physical education, health, and the arts in our daily schedule. This would help to provide students with a well-rounded education, and more opportunities in their futures. One way I propose to optimize class time is through the use of dry-erase boards in our daily math class.
This proposal is to purchase 32 dry-erase boards and a back up set of Expo markers for my 4th grade classroom. These boards would enhance the students classroom experience in so many ways! Students would be able to do math problems on their own board, and then share their answer with partners or the whole class. The boards would quicken the pace of their learning, the easy erasing capability allowing them to correct their answers and move to the next question with ease. All students would immediately be able to show that they have mastered the math problems we do every day in class, giving us extra time as a class to try to squeeze in other areas of study, such as the arts and physical education. These boards would optimize our learning time, and help to turn students into Mathematicians!
