As a 12th grade English teacher in a low-income urban community, I have several goals for my students. One of my missions is to teach students the importance of sorting through and understanding all of the information they encounter.
In today's world of the internet, blogs and other varied information sources, it is vital that students understand how to evaluate information. Part of this process involves students learning how to find and use sources in their own writing. Students must also learn how sources are supposed to be explained and cited to help their own writing and to help them evaluate other's writing. This is why I am requesting a set of MLA handbooks for students to use as we work towards our goal of writing a college level research paper.
Part of my district's graduation requirement is that students write a ten-page research paper as part of a senior project. As a senior teacher and senior project advisor last year, I saw that a vast number of students did not understand the purposes or requirements of research papers. Many students turned in papers that not only cited sources incorrectly but also did not use sources in an effective way. With my senior classes this year I am striving to correct all of these errors. One of the most effective ways to do this is to teach my students the components of a research paper using the MLA research handbook. I will not only be teaching my students the proper use of citation and research steps, but also how to navigate through research resources.
In order to both teach students the rules of research and help them find out what the rules are, I need to have the tools of the trade. In this case the tools are the MLA handbooks. These books are comprehensive, clear and easy to navigate. They also will be one of my students?first glimpses into a post-high school academic world. By giving a class set of these books, you are setting up success for both my current and future students as they use these books again and again. By giving this gift to my classes you are also ensuring that all students who leave my classroom not only know how to perform research but also know that they are better critical thinkers as they continuously encounter new information.
