Help Create Manga {Graphic Novel} Section for Kids!

My students need 44 graphic novels to kick-start a new Manga reading section in our school library.

My Students

"If I was a book, I would like to be a library book, so I would be taken home by all different sorts of kids...A library book, I imagine, is a happy book," wrote author Cornelia Funke.

My middle school students (grades 6-7-8) enjoy reading Manga (graphic novels) but my library has very few of them to meet their needs.

For some of the lower-level or reluctant readers, it is often through these graphic novels that their love of reading is sparked. My students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures and are looking for more Manga at their interest level, yet most only have my school library to turn to for reading materials. Many of these kids come from challenging home lives, as evidenced by the fact that 57% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. I can make the library a safe and welcoming place for all of our students, but my budget cannot afford all the Manga books they need.

My Project

Placing a new Manga book in the hand of any student, especially a middle school teen, will brighten their day and remind them that people care about them and want to encourage their reading aspirations. These Manga books will kick-start a new Manga/Graphic Novel reading section in my school library. Students will learn about important character traits in these books, such as courage, teamwork and pride. These Manga books will circulate throughout our entire student population of about 1,000 students.

In short, I want to promote reading to all my students, but especially with my lower-level readers and those who dislike reading.

The best way for me to do this is by a Manga/Graphic Novel section in my middle school library and I need these 44 books to draw attention to this space. Sparking the love of reading in a child is an amazing gift that these books will help provide.
