The students we serve range from grades 6-12 and are all in the special education program for our school district. Diagnoses range from ADD to autism to sensory processing disorder. They learn quickly and are always happy to try new things.
I love watching their desire to learn and are so proud of their accomplishments.
Each of the 40 students I serve are learning new skills each day and I look forward to helping them learn more and develop new life skills and hone the ones they already know.
They are the highlight of my day as a therapist and they have inspired me to go back to school to get my teaching credentials.
My Project
Technology in a large school district doesn't always provide all the tools needed to properly support students with special needs. As an OT assistant, I am one of the few that have a laptop but it is dated. The hard drive and memory are lacking leaving me unable to perform the functions that I need to support my students.
This gift of technology will go a long way to provide many real-life and school supports for students with special needs.
I will be able to better support the classroom staff and specialists so that they can focus on teaching. Instructional assistants don't often get a laptop assigned to them. This laptop will be able to run the imaging, office and many other applications that I use on a daily basis without any interruption or loss of materials. I create supports for time management, communication, job-related tasks, handwriting and much more. I have access to the programs, but my machine can't run them functionally.
Although my impact looks small in number, my resources are shared district-wide and have the potential to impact thousands of students, teachers, and families.
