Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so privileged to work with so many incredible 9th and 10th graders this year in my English classes. They are indeed a special bunch and are amazing in every way, as they are creative, innovative, and enthusiastic!
Like many students, the ones I work with face many challenges and work hard in spite of these difficulties.
Many come from low-income households and some need support services for academic and/or emotional struggles. Despite these obstacles, they attend school regularly and are eager to learn.
My students know that through their active involvement in their education, they will be prepared for life after high school in college or in the workforce. These students realize how important it is to be proficient in reading and writing, and one of the best ways to do this is through reading books of their choice and doing so often. It is my hope to fuel their love of reading, so they will be equipped to be lifelong learners, and hence, positive contributors to our society.
My Project
My classroom library is in desperate need of some current high-interest books. My collection is sparse and old; it is in need of a refresh and a reboot so that my book offerings will truly entice the students to read and hook them as readers for life.
This reading workshop unit helps many of my students fall in love with reading, and what could possibly be better than that?
For this project, I have chosen high-interest and Nutmeg Award nominates books by popular teen and young adult authors like Ellen Hopkins, Nicholas Sparks, and Dean Koontz, and I hope these books are so popular that my students are fighting over who gets to read which book first.
Each year our reading workshop unit is a popular one, but it is dependent on my ability to provide a wide variety of engaging, high-interest books. My students are thrilled to have a voice in choosing which book they want to read, not one chosen by the teacher for once. In order for this unit to be a success, I need to be able to offer a wide variety of engaging texts in a variety of reading levels. Please help me make this happen.
