Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in an under-resourced early childhood school in the Bronx. In first grade, one of the biggest goals that I have for my students is that they become skilled and enthusiastic readers. This will only happen if they both learn to read, and learn to love reading enough that they will choose to pick up a book. While all of my children are great readers, I have six students who are especially terrific readers. They are all reading on a fourth or fifth grade level at this time in the year, and will devour any book that I put in front of them. Unfortunately, I have noticed that these children's motivation to read is slipping, because all of the books in my classroom are far below their reading level. Since my school is an early childhood school, we have no books higher than a first grade level, which means that I have nothing appropriate for these children to read. They complain that all of our books are "boring" and "easy".
In order to remedy this, I started a "book club" for these students, wherein I went out and bought six copies of more advanced novels with my own money. I give these books to these students to read during reading time for a week. We then get together, have a snack, and talk about the book. My students love this! Unfortunately, the cost of these books has become prohibitive, and I'm going to have to discontinue the book club if I cannot get any more appropriate books for these students. There are so many classics of children's literature that I have not yet exposed them to, and I would love the opportunity to share these wonderful books with my students. Please help me maintain the book club by providing group sets of some classic children's books that we can use for book club! These books will also enable me to meet the needs of the more advanced students in next year's class of first graders right from the first day.
