Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a low-income school in a borough neighborhood in New York. The majority of my students are academically and emotionally challenged and suffer from trauma and poverty. As a result, they exhibit depression, anxiety, and exhibit aggressive behaviors on a daily basis. Their parents and caregivers are also struggling and aren't always able to provide their children with the tools they need to even have a chance of success. A large number of our students are living in temporary housing and are traveling over an hour each way just to get to school.
I would love to be able to provide them a cool and inviting office space for them to relax and cool down both physically and emotionally.
As a school counselor, students come to my room when they are upset, and feeling guarded and ashamed.
My Project
We are trying to build a social-emotional library in the counseling room. I run small groups and provide individual counseling, mostly for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders.
Julia Cook is an amazing author who writes about specific topics related to many issues that come up on a daily basis for my students.
Last month a 5th grade student in our school passed away, unexpectedly, and our counselors have been working overtime, trying to help students process all of their emotions and questions. Having books, and being able to read to them, has shown to be a great comfort to the students.
