I teach primary school, grades K-2, in a very small and poor town in Georgia.
The majority of the students live below the poverty line and lack the basic necessities and/or life skills. We are identified as a Title 1 school and 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Despite the unfortunate living conditions, most students still come to school happy and ready to learn. We strive to make students feel safe, happy, and smart for the 8 hours they are with us.
My Project
I am fortunate enough to have have a classroom where each student has their own I-Pad. We use these I-PADS throughout the day for various activities. One of my favorite things to do with the students is for them to use their I-PADS to "show me what they know." Instead of using pencil and paper to assess my 1st graders I want students to be able to create projects through different apps to express what they have learned. Yes, you heard me right, FIRST grade students are able to create and publish projects on the iPad independently.
Seeing my students being proud of their accomplishment when they succeed on these projects is priceless, and a reminder of why I love what I do!!
It would be absolutely amazing if we were able to print projects created from the I-PADS. The only problem is, we don't have a color printer. Due to lack of funding, there is no color printer in our school that is assessable to teachers. We have one printer per grade level which is "housed" in the work room in each hall. Every teacher uses the one printer if they need to print something in black and white. Having a color printer in my classroom would enhance learning. We would be able to print projects in color, which in return would make my students even more excited about completing and taking pride in their assignments. We need a color printer and ink to display all of the projects and activities we make on the iPads.
