Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

The First Grade students in our classroom are completely crazy about Clifford. Clifford is the famous big, red dog who appears in dozens of children's books, games, computer software and even stars in his own PBS television program. Let's face it - the dog knows how to market himself. In order to spark enthusiasm for reading, I am hoping to make a "Clifford Bin" available to students complete with books, games, toys and videos about everyone's favorite dog. Clifford material is extremely helpful with academics because it encompasses a broad subject area. The character can be incorporated into reading, writing, math, science and social studies lessons. Its benefits are stretched even further due to Clifford's careful attention to character education and other life lessons. This grant would purchase sets of Clifford books for small groups of children to read together, Clifford books on tape for students who struggle with reading fluently, Clifford puzzles and a Clifford backpack which students will be able to take home and share with their families. Having these high-interest materials available for the students will further their love and enthusiasm for learning!
