This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In our studio at Clark Street Elementary in Henderson, NC, all of my students are working hard to become full-fledged Art Stars! This is the first year my school has space for an art classroom (the previous fine arts teacher was mobile) and I want to build a structured, welcoming studio environment where students can reach their highest academic and artistic potential. In addition to practical instruction, I am implementing an art history program where students can research and present their knowledge of major artists and movements to the class on a weekly basis.
My goal is to create an art library full of age-appropriate books that will help students develop their artistic technique and learn about art throughout history. I already have the necessary space planned out including bookshelves, motivational posters and comfortable areas to sit and do research. All I need are engaging art books that pre-K through fifth grade students can use for their projects. The school budget does not allow for funding in this area, but I am certain that with help from donors, we can create a library that will be an essential component of a comprehensive and permanent fine arts program at the school. I believe that a fine arts program is a necessary part of any curriculum; it teaches creativity, organizational and critical thinking skills and can be especially beneficial to students who lack confidence in more traditional academic subjects.
