Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
Even though they are in second grade, our goal at the end is to eventually prepare them for college.
Every day that they come to school, they are reminded of the importance of learning and becoming the first person in their family to graduate from college. My role as a teacher is to support them to achieve this goal.
My Project
I am trying to recreate a classroom environment for my already disadvantaged students that don't have the same opportunities as other children in America. In order to teach them virtually, I need tools like tablets.
I'm using a virtual assignment program for 19 of my students, but only 4 of them have access.
With this program, I am creating daily lessons in which the students can connect with me virtually and interact with their classmates. I've created a lesson that integrates reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. This week they would be learning geometry by viewing videos from China, Italy, and Australia, exposed to multi-cultural places while at the same time engaging in meaningful conversations. They would also have open-ended questions for writing and a problem of the day in their lesson. However, in order for all of them to access these engaging lessons, they need the proper technology to help them in these troubling times, as I cannot ensure that the implementation of these tools is available and disposable to them. As of right now I only have 4 students with laptops and internet access to these. As for the other 15, they and their families are struggling to put food on their tables, much less preoccupied with purchasing this type of expensive equipment.
When my students are off during summer break, they forget a large portion of information that they learned during the year. We cannot let them lose an extra 2 months of school. I've already created the lessons and done the work, all I need to do now is find a way to reach them. If you are in a position where you can help, it would be greatly appreciated by me and my kids. Thank you.
