Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a speech language pathologist, I get the pleasure of working with students from kindergarten through sixth grade. My students are a unique bunch, coming in all shapes, colors, sizes and personalities, with one great thing in common: the desire to work hard, be kind and do their best. Our school is run on a dual immersion program, so my students receive part of their curriculum in English and part in Spanish. As dual language learners, my students have to put in the extra effort every single day to be engaged and active learners.
Being in special education isn't something all students are comfortable having broadcast; however, my students come to speech with pride, joy and excitement.
In the speech classroom, my students know that they are in charge of their success, and that they get to choose everyday to be their best self. My students have aspirations of graduating high school and going to college, many of whom would be the first in their family to do so.
My Project
As a new professional in the field of speech language pathology, my supply closet and my material shelves are looking at bit empty compared to those more seasoned SLPs in the field. I am a big proponent of hands-on work. I like to try my best to stay away from worksheets and busy work and focus on activities that will help my students transfer the skills they learn in my classroom out into the real world.
While I like to believe I am pretty resourceful in working with "what I've got", I can only begin to imagine the possibilities for future speech therapy sessions, given some of the materials on my list such as sight words and write and wipe pockets.
My project "wish list" consists of some supplies for the classroom and some language-based materials created by Lakeshore. These items are things I had access to while working in the speech and language clinic in graduate school. I am familiar with these materials and how to (creatively) use them for far more than just what they were created for.
