I teach 2nd grade in a pre-K-8th-grade elementary school in Chicago Public Schools. Because we are a lottery school, our students come from all areas around the city.
Do you remember the excitement of finding your new seat each time the seating chart changed in your classroom?
Who will you sit by? Will you get a full table? Will there be a chair to sit in? These are the real thoughts going through my students' heads each quarter when we change tables.
My students are curious, creative, and kind. They care about one another and have created an amazing community within our classroom. Personalized learning is essential to their social-emotional and academic growth as their needs become more vast and diverse with each year!
My Project
My students need places to sit and learn! Once or twice per week, I hear "chair down"! yelled across our classroom. Another seat has separated from its base, and students eagerly raise their hand to go on a "chair hunt" around the school.
As much fun as it is to hunt for "chair treasure," no student should be left to their own devices when it comes to seating at school.
My students need practical, comfortable, collaborative and flexible seating in their classroom. Different seating arrangements provide opportunities for students to collaborate, focus, and be creative. These chairs would provide a desk, table, and floor spaces for my students to engage in everyday learning.
