I have a large population of Chinese students at my school near Chinatown. I see students from PreK to 2nd grade, and there are 5 classes of each grade level. Many of the students are new to the USA and are not able to understand or read in English. I have begun a small section of English/Chinese bilingual books which are checked out by all students. I have also enlisted older students to read the stories on tape in both Cantonese and in Mandarin. I then read the story in English so that the student can begin to pick up some English vocabulary and skills. They can listen to these stories at a listening center. I would like to increase this collection so the students will have a greater variety from which to choose.
The materials I will need which can be ordered from www.asiaforkids.com are as follows;
The Wibbly Wobbly Tooth
Mei Ling's Hiccups
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
Lima's Red Hot Chilli
The Swirling Hijaab
What Shall We Do with the Boo-Hoo Baby?
Ellie's Secret Diary-Don't Bully Me!
Badger's Parting Gifts
Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?
Monkey King Vol
Sleeping Beauty
Rescuers Down Under
This benefits the new students and those who are proficient in both languages. Since Mandarin is taught as a second language even non-native speakers benefit by finding characters that they have learned.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
