This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My ninth grade students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or fourth language. They come from Haiti, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala.Cape Verde, Afghanistan, Gambia, Vietnam, Portugal, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic. My students are incredible, hard-working young men and women who work part-time, take care of family members, play sports and attend our after-school programs.

Your donation will help my students become true photojournalists.

For many of my students, reading in their native language is a struggle.

This school year, I will teach a newspaper unit that incorporates journalism and my students will write their own newspaper articles. In the past, students have resorted to their own cell phone cameras, which usually results in blurry snapshots. My students will use the DSLR camera to create portraits of their new city, people they interview, and our amazing school environment.

We can all agree that the news media is very visual in today’s world. It is often the picture or video, not the written word, that garners attention.. My students will be able to use this real-life skill to tell the stories that they investigate. A DSLR camera will give students the opportunity to take incredible photos.
