Help Buy Digital Devices For Our New Digital Library
My students need digital devices, including a Nook and iPods, in order to download audio books and ebooks from our school district's new online digital library.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Our students are just that excited about the opportunity to download ebooks and audio books to digital devices.
Our students are Kindergarten through 5th grade students.
This is a public school in Texas. We are considered a property-poor district because it is a "bedroom" community without a lot of industry. Because of this, the tax base is very low and the available funds for our students is one of the lowest in the state of Texas.
My Project
These resources will change the lives of many of our students who come from low-income homes and don't have the advantage of technology provided by their families. Also, many of our students are struggling readers and in order to be able to hear and see the books they are reading, their fluency and comprehension will be helped greatly. The digital library our school subscribes to can only support specific devices in order for the children to view and listen to books. We need Nooks which are e-readers from Barnes & Noble which allow the students to download books and view them. We also need MP3 players and iPods which will allow the students to listen to audio books that they have downloaded. Research has shown that students who read regularly, score higher on standardized tests. There is also data that shows that students who become lifelong readers are more successful in their adult lives whether they go to college or not.
It has been proven with research data that the more children read, the better they will do on state test assessments and eventually the ability to function in society as adults.
We also want to instill the love of reading so that they become lifelong readers.
