My Students
CES is located in Lewiston, ME. There are over 13 languages spoken at our school since our population is mostly immigrants and "at-risk" students (students with 4 or more ACES). Our students are extremely creative, smart, energetic, caring, and blow my mind with their abilities every day. I am excited to have the privilege of teaching EVERY ONE OF THEM this year, as STEM is K-6. My students have very little exposure to computer programming and engineering since STEM was added to our curriculum last year. These donations will be going towards expanding students minds within my classroom and within the 21st Century After school Program (which I also work at).
My Project
These will be used in my STEM classroom as supplemental activites, but will mostly be used with my 21st Century After School Club groups as a "Fun Friday" activity, as there is more time available for the students to explore the kits. After my students have learned to follow project directions and build their own creations using simpler LEGO sets, they will complete building and coding projects provided by the LEGO WeDo kits. The WeDo's are programmed using the tablet (which also provides the story for the project). I already have one tablet in my lab, I just need one more for the second WeDo kit. For each project, the students have solve a problem for Max and Mia, two characters in the LEGO app, and build and code a machine for them.
My students have very little to no experience playing and building with LEGO bricks, let alone using them to code!
I am excited to see their eyes light up when they build and code their first robots using these WeDo kits and tablet.
