I am super excited to announce that I will be helping to open a new middle school in West Oakland this fall! We will be building our school beginning with 6th grade. West Oakland has long been a hub of hard work, the arts, and culture. Many of our families have been in Oakland for generations and have overcome challenges like violence and poverty. Our mission is to ensure that children have the opportunity to achieve academically and personally through authentic, project-based learning, in order to be successful in college and beyond - especially those who will be the first in their family to attend college.
We know that finding quality teachers is hard, but also the most important determinate of student success.
As a fledgling school in a teacher shortage, I will be teaching our double block project-based S.T.E.A.M class in addition to leading our school's special education department.
As a self-proclaimed nerd, I am thrilled to get to teach science through hands-on projects! In 6th grade we get to learn about everything from plants, animals, genetics, cells, and reproduction to the geological formation of our Earth, types of energy and energy transfer, and global sustainability.
My Project
The items included in this project will help students learn through hands-on projects and activities. We will see, sketch, model, and build our own animal and plant cells. We will learn about reproduction through microscopes and expand this to the plant and animal kingdoms as we explore global biomes. We will learn about the way sunlight is used as energy through cooking ourselves some lunch! Then apply this to what it means for our Earth in terms of sustainability.
