Help me give my students authentic texts to read in the classroom. I have been learning about the science of reading and cannot wait to start using it to help my students become better readers!
Hi! I'm Mrs. Johnson. I teach 3rd grade special education students. My students typically have severe decoding disabilities and have struggled with reading since kindergarten. Although I teach reading, math, writing, behavior, and social skills to my students teaching reading is my favorite! I teach student with a wide range of disabilities such as autism, specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, and intellectual disabilities. My favorite thing about my students is watching them learn and grow! I love to see how far they have come by the end of the school year.
My Project
Lately, I have been really digging into the research behind the science of reading. I am learning how students learn how to read. I am in need of authentic texts for my students to read while they are with me. I have very little resources to use in my school district besides our leveled readers. I am learning that these leveled readers encourage my students to guess at words instead of using their phonemic knowledge to sound out/decode unfamiliar words! These texts I am in need of will help my students not only become better readers; it will help them become lifelong readers!
