My students need books in order to improve their literacy and cultivate a love of reading such as the Hunger Games, Harry Potter Series, and Wonder.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading and writing go hand in hand. Reading improves writing and vice versa. This correlation is incredibly important for my students, some of whom are as many as 5 grades behind where they need to be. As such it is incredibly important to build strong reading habits in my students.
My students are incredibly sweet and caring individuals.
In the first month and a half of school, I have seen them translate for one another, teach each other how to open up locks (a task that is new to sixth graders), applaud one another for an accomplish, and be incredibly patient with a student who is a selective mute in our class. My students are also determined to learn, however they face a number of academic hurdles such as trouble focusing, the fact that English is not their first language, and because they are a number of grades below current grade level. Furthermore, as a Title 1 school (defined as meeting the educational needs of low-achieving children in our Nation's highest-poverty schools) the books in our library are around 50 years old. As such, it is crucial for them to have access to books that they WANT to read and books that are relevant to their current lives. Access to such books will increase their desire to read thus increasing their academic success.
My Project
The books donated to our classroom will serve as independent reading books. We all remember books that were important to us growing up and books that widened our own views of the world around us. Reading will expose my students to worlds other than their own and will challenge their own preconceived notions. My students have already expressed a desire to read- they simply need books that are relevant. Through reading more, my students will not only become more exposed to ideas other than their own but they will also become better writers. Furthermore, it is my hope that increased reading will help close the gap to where my students are now (some of them as far behind as 5 grade levels) to where they need to be. Lastly, it is my hope that increased reading of various types of books will inspire my students to be life-long learners.
It's jarring to see 50 year old books in your classroom library- it's not necessarily the most inspiring thing for a young student.
As such, in order to get students to want to read and to begin to build intrinsic motivation towards academic success, it is important to increase students access to books that are important to them. Furthermore, donating and providing new books to our classroom library will demonstrate to my students that there are people who care whether or not they succeed.
