My students need books for independent reading throughout the school year. The series collections in my cart help readers become invested in storylines, encouraging them to sustain their reading habit. This helps to create lifelong readers!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My sixth graders are energetic and inquisitive. Their zeal for learning is unmatched, and I love that they love reading! This sense of exploration that they have developed creates a classroom environment that motivates and inspires.
Their enthusiasm paired with my desire to provide the most effective learning opportunities makes for scholars who grow exponentially over the course of a school year.
This growth is not only measurable by grades and test scores. These students are maturing intellectually and emotionally. I would like to think that their practice in reading and writing has helped this process along.
The students with whom I have the opportunity to interact make me a better teacher. Their enthusiasm is infectious and they drive me to match their energy and dedication daily. My hope is that I have made as positive an impact in their lives as they have had on mine.
My Project
These materials will allow students access to a wide variety of books to choose from for an ongoing independent reading project. Students will be given time to explore new titles and choose a book to read. Once they have chosen, they will have two to three weeks to finish the book. After students finish their books, they will present book talks and respond to open-ended prompts. These assessments will build reading stamina, develop comprehension and ultimately encourage their peers to read.
The goal is to create a positive habit of reading for enjoyment and exploration in these students.
Having a wide variety of books from which to choose is an integral part of developing these students as lifelong readers.
