I am the new 7th grade English teacher at KIPP STAR College Prep Charter School, which is located in Harlem. Eighty-six percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunches. At KIPP STAR, students attend school from 7:15 until 5 pm Monday through Friday. They also attend school every other Saturday and during the summer. These extended school hours are part of our effort to do whatever it takes to allow students to climb the mountain to college. KIPP STAR opened with a fifth grade in 2003. Now, in our third year of operation, we have added a seventh grade. This means that we also need to add a seventh grade classroom library. Statistics show kids who read more consistently achieve more academically. Experience has taught me that the best way to invest students in reading is to provide them with engaging books. For this reason, I am asking for a collection of classroom library books, which will be purchased from Barnes and Noble. I selected these books based on my prior experience teaching 7th grade reading, my research on the reading lists at top middle schools, and my desire to both challenge and engage my students. I know that, with a collection of challenging and engaging classroom library books, I will be able to run a successful reading workshop. I see these books as essential to my students' success in English class this year and, ultimately, to their chances of being admitted to the finest high schools and colleges.
